Cancer For College

Cancer for College is proud to match the generous gift made by the Legacy
Foundation. Together, we are committed to helping cancer survivors thrive in a life beyond cancer.

Cancer for College was founded in 1993 by three-time cancer survivor and double amputee Craig Pollard. He experienced firsthand the physical, emotional, and financial toll the disease can have on a family. Since inception, Cancer for College has provided over $8 million in support to the cancer community through need-based college scholarships, educational experiences and medical debt relief.

Our medical debt relief program was developed through ongoing conversations with our scholarship recipients. A recurring theme emerged: while college is expensive, medical debt can be financially devastating for families facing cancer. In the United States, the average cost of cancer treatment ranges from $100,000 to $150,000. Even with excellent insurance, expenses such as uncovered treatments, coverage caps, lodging, and co-payments can create an overwhelming financial burden on families.

Through our medical debt relief pilot program, we were able to eliminate $151,000 in medical debt for 20 cancer survivors. Our data shows that for every $2,500 invested, we can eliminate approximately $10,000 in medical debt.
