At Feeding San Diego, our mission is to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue. Nearly 400,000 people are experiencing food insecurity in San Diego County, including close to 100,000 children. Meanwhile, approximately 31% of all food produced in the United States is going unsold or uneaten each year. This gap between surplus food and community need is where we step in, rescuing high quality food before it goes to waste and getting it to people who need it most.
Last year, Feeding San Diego provided more than 31 million meals to people facing hunger. We distribute meals in partnership with more than 300 local charities, schools, faith communities, meal sites, and food pantries throughout the region.
SCHOOL PANTRY PROGRAM
Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry program bridges the financial gap for families by providing food assistance at locations they already visit, removing barriers to access and ensuring children and parents have a reliable source of nutritious food. It also allows parents to take less time away from work or looking for work and allows for savings on fuel and public transit costs.
According to survey results, children served through the School Pantry Program experience improved health, well-being, food security, and school readiness, while also alleviating stress and improving health for the parents.
Feeding San Diego has 62 active School Pantry sites, with each serving an average of 120 low-income families per distribution. As we continue to face economic uncertainty, this program grows more vital for families across San Diego. In response, we made a goal to have 100 school sites by 2030. With 50+ schools currently on a waitlist for the program, we will continue to expand the program in the next year, thanks to the generosity of the Legacy Golf Invitational!
